It’s not awkward to take your mother on a date, especially when it’s mother’s day. Most mums (thankfully like mine) are fairly easy to please on their day; breakfast, some flowers and you are in the good books until next year. Others though aren’t so easy to please. I could easily rattle off a number of cool cafes to take mum for breakfast but you can handle that yourself. These are some other ideas for a date with mum.
Mother’s Day Classic
Some mums might not love the idea of you making them run 8km on ‘their’ day, but for the past 15 years many Australians have done this on the morning of Mother’s Day. The Mother’s Day Classic raises funds for breast cancer research and in Melbourne you can either walk or run around Alexander Gardens and the Botanical Gardens. My advice, choose the leisurely 4km walk option and take the whole family. Afterwards hang around, grab a coffee from the food area and relax in the gardens.

High Tea at the Langham
In my day I’ve taken my folks to some pretty cool spots, well spots I think are cool but they normally don’t hit the mark with the 50 + crowd. One day I took them to the Langam for a buffet lunch and I was the best son in the entire world… horses for courses. This Mother’s Day the Langham are hosting a very extravagant and very indulgent High Tea where mum can get her nails done, have a massage and snack on gourmet ribbon sandwiches. She’ll be so happy, it will no doubt be worth at least 5 mid week dinner visits. You won’t have to see her again for months!

If fluffy scones and ribbon sandwiches aren’t for your mum, then how about you try a high tea with a difference. Saigon Sally is Hanoi Hannah’s sexy older sister, both are Vietnamese restaurants that serve affordable modern dishes in a very cool atmosphere. This Mother’s Day, Saigon Sally will be introducing their own High Tea with Vietnamese sweet and savoury dishes matched with exotic teas. If mum wants something a little harder then tea, Saigon Sally are also matching cocktails to their High Tea… Score!

Picnic
The trusty old picnic. Melbourne’s autumn weather has been glorious thus far, so if Giaan Rooney tells us it’s going to be a lovely day I suggest calling Fitrovia on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. I’m not suggesting you book a table, although it is one of my favourite breakfast spots so feel free to do so, but book yourself one of their famous pic-a-nic-baskets. The price tag may be hefty, but the food is amazing. They have absolutely everything covered, right down to the blanket. So pop into Fiztorvia, grab a coffee to go and take your gourmet picnic basket over the road to Albert Park with your old mother dearest.

Love this! My Mum & I always try to go somewhere new for afternoon tea on Mothers Day. Last year it was the Studley Park Boat House, the year before was the Windsor, so fingers crossed the Langham might be this year! Ha ha, you will definitely be in the good books if you take your Mum to the Langham, I know I will be too 🙂
